Warning: Second Hand Smoke is Hazardous to your Heart
Secondhand smoke poses a serious and immediate threat to the heart.
Enforcing strong smoking bans protects hearts. “Warning, Secondhand Smoke is Hazardous to Your Heart” is a film made by Global Smokefree Partnership (GSP) to summarize the evidence on secondhand smoke and cardiovascular disease, and point out how smoke-free policy can save lives. It features cardiologists and policymakers from around the world and focuses on the link between tobacco and heart disease.

SUMMARY
The British medical journal The Lancet studied 14 developing nations and found that nearly half of men and 11 percent of women in those countries use tobacco, mostly smoke products. Jeffrey Brown talks to State University of New York at Buffalo’s Gary Giovino about why some cultures don’t specifically encourage quitting.

Introductions
Bio: K. Michael Cummings is trained in public health education and is widely recognized as one of the leading authorities in tobacco epidemiology and smoking cessation. He recently joined the faculty of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) after a 30-year career at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute where he directed a clinical and research center on tobacco control, including the New York State Smokers’ Quitline. At MUSC, he is on the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and he co-leads the tobacco-related research program in the Hollings Cancer Center. Dr. Cummings has authored or co-authored over 300 scientific papers including landmark reports for the Office of the Surgeon General, the NCI, IARC, and the IOM. In the late 1990s, Cummings contributed to digitizing and publishing online previously secret internal tobacco industry documents. Because of his vast expertise in smoking behavior and knowledge of industry documents he has served as an expert witness in legal proceeding against cigarette manufacturers, including proceedings that resulted in the Master Settlement Agreement. In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious Luther Terry award given out by the American Cancer Society in recognition of his research contributions to the field of public health.
